  The Vera Project

  I love spontaneity. So does my girlfriend. So last night we decided to take a walk in the rain, and ended up seeing an incredible show at the Vera Project, but not for what you may be thinking. We are fans of Pony Time, and have seen a few of their past shows. The other three bands we had never heard of. We just wanted to have some fun, and perhaps listen to something new, and Vera did not disappoint.
  
  The headliner of the night was the band Daydream Vacation. This band played mostly electronica. At first, two guys from a group called Head Like a Kite (apparently part of DV) played a sporadic arrhythmia of samples while acting in a seemingly effortless overreaching stage drama. HLAK were by far the least impressive act of the night. We were about to leave until Asya from Smooch got up there and started singing. It was definitely better once she was on stage, leaving the lead singer of HLAK to vie for attention by interrupting Asya's melodic voice with simplistically stupid phrases. There was a definite lack of chemistry between the two, which made it somewhat uncomfortable to watch as the singer for HLAK was trying way too hard to be relevant. Both my girlfriend and I were embarrassed for him. A bit corny really. But Asya held it together enough to make us stay through the whole show. DV would be good, if only HLAK would shutty.
  
  Before Daydream Vacation was Pony Time. If you've ever seen Pony Time on stage, you know what I'm about to say. They were a complete opposite of HLAK and DV in the best way possible. This grimy, Sex Pistol-like sounding band that never fails to entertain. I make sure I always catch their act if I know they are playing.
  
  But by far, the surprise of the night came from a band I never heard of until last night, but will now be on my music radar. At first, I saw these kids (and I mean kids) walk on the stage, and I was thinking, "Damn! What did we get ourselves into?" Well, we have to admit Seven Dials blew us away! I really don't know what else to say about them. Their songs were melodic and atmospheric. They just seemed to have that something that great bands have that's hard to explain. We're fans! After their set I saw on their website said that they're siblings, which hopefully is a positive sign that this will be a band that will be making music together for a long time (unless there's Gallagher issues...Oasis anyone?). It's a bit unnerving that I'm fan being that they're so young (the drummer was born in 2003!). But I noticed once they started playing, their ages mattered not to the people who were listening. Seven Dials are simply a great band, and everyone at Vera last night felt it.
