Get ready for a detailed complaint about this place. Hanny's was my bar of choice in Phoenix, but no more.
After making it a point to stop by occasionally for an after-hour cocktail or two ever since I moved to AZ (just over 2 years ago), I had experienced OK but not great service from the bar staff. Not the best conversationalists, but you can’t expect a whole lot from 20-somethings pouring drinks, I guess. I had noticed once or twice going in that there seemed to be something humorous between one of the managers and a staff member, and it seemed to be aimed at me, but I brushed it off. I can be very serious, especially after work, and I rarely smile.
Last week, however, one of the staff who I had no problem with even recently now behaved as if I had “stiffed” him, asking me for a debit or credit card, and then said “here’s your money” - in an obvious “dis” - when he handed me my change. After that he ignored me. A real asshole! I complained, but the manager did not seem sympathetic. Forget it. The food sucks there also.
I’ve lived in several U.S. cities, each with a distinct character, and I’ve received more than my share of attitude in restaurants and bars. I’ve often noticed the larger the city, the better the service. I’ve been treated like s#!t in Denver and Minneapolis (and now Phoenix), but love going out when I’m in Montreal, Boston or New York. San Fran is great too. I guess Phoenix has a long way to go before it hits the big time, and the downtown area is not exactly "booming". A real ghost town.
