Hanny's is by far the best place for drinks and hanging out downtown. Hanny's takes it's name from the original business, the premier downtown men's clothing store that was built in the 1940s. After decades of abandonment and neglect (the building is one of the few remaining structures to escape the downtown wrecking ball) Hanny's reopened in 2008. It has a distinct 1940s meets modern day atmosphere, a place that knows what it is and does it well.
Hanny's is the only place in town to get a decent mint julep, however, my drink of choice is always a manhattan. The food is great: thin crust pizzas, salads, sandwiches. I usually split a veggie or margarita pizza. If I'm not starving I enjoy the Bar Plate with my liquor. The elevator shaft, the basement, the upper floor and the bathrooms next to the mirrors are all places worthy of exploration.
Service has always been terrific when I go (and I've been a loyal patron of Hanny's since 2008). I go at least once a week.
Everyone needs to stop trying to force downtown Phoenix to be like some other city. Phoenix is Phoenix. And that's what it should be. Downtown is experiencing a new renaissance, and to me, Hanny's is the flagship downtown restaurant. It's one of a kind.
