Pride and Joy - - If that's the case then Myron Mixon will do well to be at the restaurant (that he doesn't own by himself but bares his name) all of the time. And why is that? Well, when he's not there, the food isn't the same as when he is.
I recently dined there and the quality of the food (while decent) wasn't all award-winning BBQ. I started off with the smoked wings - - problem was that they were deep-fried and didn't spend much - if any - time in the smoker. These wings were small (and yes, wings do come graded) and average at best. Disappointing.
From there I went to their St. Louis-style ribs. This rack was small and not very appealing. However, these ribs were spot on - smokey and very flavorful with a very tasty rub. The texture was perfect.
Then I ventured to what was advertised as a smoked 1/2 chicken. Like the chicken wings, this yardbird didn't spend much, if any time in a smoker. In fact, I would venture to say these were oven-baked. Basically tasteless and an embarrassment for the Winningest Man in BBQ.
The only side that I had was an order of slaw and it was a hefty portion. It was rough cut (not minced) and very flavorful. Sides come a la carte and this was way too expensive.
My servers were excellent and knowledgeable about the product. The ribs were excellent but the chicken wings and the 1/2 chicken were both major disappointments. Decor was very nice and their back porch (with huge picnic-style tables) was very appealing.
This place isn't in the best of neighborhoods and parking is an adventure. I don't think this is a dangerous neighborhood per se but you wouldn't want your mama or girlfriend wandering those backstreets by themselves after dark either.
If Myron Mixon doesn't think that Brother Jimmy's or Sparky's Roadside BBQ aren't serving up very solid BBQ then he's sadly mistaken. Brother Jimmy's and Sparky's are both serving representative BBQ and he has competition. And, this place ain't cheap - and that's OK if everything tastes great - but everything didn't taste great.
Myron might want to spend more time here until this place is really running well and ALL of the food is up to snuff.
